It lets the photographer make a shorter lens into a longer one when needed. A TC won't work on any camera without a lens also attached in front of it. Hey, many thanks for your responses. So, I have the Sony Anyway, thanks again. This site has been so helpful to me I just can't tell you. Thank you to all. As mentioned earlier it wont auto focus with SSM based G lenses those with the focus motor built into the lens and wont work on the APO HS G because the rear lens construction sticks out the back to far.
Also remember on lenses which have have an Fstop greater than F2. The hood doesn't lock tightly. So check these issues before you buy. See my photos with Minolta mm f4. Up to mm sharp at max aperture, then needs stopping down a touch. Beautiful Minolta colours unlike some of the later Minolta lenses. Comparatively small and lightweight compared to the s.
If you can't afford G glass, probably the best option to cover this range. Flare - scored 5 with hood fitted. Needed a bit more range with my when aiming at the birds. The only thing I am missing sometimes with this one is it's focussing speed, especially at the long end. But that is what you get when you've tasted the G-class lenses with SSM. I didn't make that a negative point, because this is a totaly different price range.
Can't say I miss the 70mm range neither need the mm range from the G. On a budget this is the one that I'm keeping for the birds. Also easy to carry around. Simply love the colours!
Great light travel zoom. Great colors and bokeh. I'd like to compare it to the Sony G some day, but I have a hard time imagining the Sony is worth triple the price.
I have been trying to find a good medium telephoto for my field work. You may recall an earlier post where i described extensive testing on the g, and ended up returning the lens for a refund. Not that much better than my Beercan lens.
I immediately liked this lens because it is half the size and weight of the other candidates. Tested against the Beercan and DT, the lens performed well. It was about equal to the others at mm, but easily outperformed the Beercan at mm. It also looked good at mm. The lens has the attractive attribute of getting better as the focal length increases, which is what we want from a telephone zoom.
So, i am keeping this one. I may, or may not, keep the F4 beercan for lower light conditions. Soft wide open but not unreasonably so. Lens hood makes rotation of polarizing filter difficult. I enjoy this lens and use it as frequently as possible. Excellent color. Definitely recommend this as moderate priced tele-lens. It gives very pleasant colors and creamy bokeh.
AutoFocus works fast A and is accurate. Sharpness is the first thing I look for and this lens doesn't have it. That said, this lens is easy to carry because of it's small size and light weight, CA control is excellent, and image color is very good. If you need mm this is a cost effective solution, but I'm sticking with the lens. This lens is a very good compromise of size and IQ, ideal for travelling light. What gives? I was looking for a good tele. I had a Sony mm that was stolen.
The was quite soft at the long end. So I decided to buy a wideangle zoom, a standard zoom and a tele zoom instead. I started with the Beercan. I loved its IQ, but I hated the weight and size. People stare at you when you walk around I bought the Sigma mm, It was an older version. People think your nuts when walking around with this lens The IQ of the Sigma was dissapointing especially wide open.
No match to the Beercan. So I sold the Sigma again and bought the Minolta mm. Good size and weight but not as sharp as the beercan and a lot of flare. So I got the mm Apo D now and I guess this is it. Good IQ and not as much flare. A bit sharper than the beercan and great colors. And the size and weight is in the range I like. So I was finally able to sell my Beercan, which still remains a great lens.
The mm is sharper. Like many lenses, the Minolta name is quite good, but like many of the Japanese lenses of the mid's, one finds quality variations between lenses of the same model. In this case, I got a "good one" with the first one I purchased and it lives up to its 4.
